(Geocode only appearance) Hide Map in Survey123 Geopoint Widget

I have a Survey123 survey that uses geopoints to hit our custom geocoder for address verficiation. I'd like to have the option to turn off the map in the geopoints widget and just have the address search bar. This survey feeds into a public facing map, so having a map in the survey is redundant and probably confusing.

Starting with version 3.10, we will support a new appearance type called 'hidden'. This is not to be confused with the 'hidden' question type. By applying the 'hidden' appearance to a geopoint question, the map will not be shown in the form to the user, but the question will be available for XLSForm expressions.

Survey123 version 3.10 is planned to be released on August 6, 2020. The hidden appearance is currently available for testing in the Survey123 Early Adopter Program.

Hi James,

I tried to do this with the latest version of Survey123 Connect (3.11.123), but "hidden" is not an option for the geopoint appearance field. "Hide-Input" is, but it does not hide the map in the published survey.

Hi Levi,

It looks like you're using an older template. You can manually type in hidden and ignore the validation warning or add the 'hidden' appearance to the list of appearances by:

1. Go to the 'types' worksheet

2. Find the list of appearances (it should start around line 35 or so, depending on the specific version

3. Insert a new row in the list (this should be done in the middle of the list, not the top or bottom)

4. In the new row, enter in 'hidden' in column A.

Hey James,

I tried this, and the whole geopoint question is now hidden. The idea was to hide just the map, because I want users to enter their address in the search bar, which is connected to our custom geocoder with suggestions. I need verified addresses to be submitted. Is there a way to do this that I'm missing? Thanks!

Sorry about that - what you are asking is a different enhancement (an additional 'geocode only' appearance for geopoint). I'll update the status of this idea to better reflect this request.

At the user conference, @Ismael said he thought or hoped that a new geocode widget/question to get a point from the user without showing any map would be made available in the September release. I am not complaining if it was not. I don't see it, and I don't want to assume it is not there somewhere. Is it, or will it perhaps be part of the next release? I also didn't see anything regarding what's new in Survey123 for the September 2021 release.

Hi @DaveFullerton,

Yes the geocode appearance (address question) is now supported in 3.13 release in both Connect and web designer, and the field and web app. This allows an address to be entered into a text question, which is then geocoded, and the location can be applied to a hidden geopoint question to set the point without the user seeing the map.
