Superscripts and subscripts

This idea is taken from @NicoleBraun in her post New story maps text/format functionality. I'm breaking this out specifically because the functionality is important and super useful across many types of StoryMaps. Her explanation is below.

Superscripts and subscripts are not available. Seeing as though we use our story maps to jazz up scientific reports, this often creates bulky footnotes for us that take away from our stories, specifically if we can't change text size either.

Hopefully this can be implemented in the next update or two.

Hi @Anonymous User -- We are in the process of overhauling the text editor in ArcGIS StoryMaps. Some features we are looking at for the new editor include super/subscripts, nested lists, link detection, support for markdown shortcuts, and many other low-level updates to improve the experience of working with text.

This is a big project, so it's not something that we can roll out quickly. We are targeting Q4 of this year for release of this new text editor.

In the interim, the ALT code 0178 will produce a ², seems to work even in story maps. Thanks to https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/24393/km2-or-sqkm-which-is-more-correct for this info!

All -- Just wanted to provide some helpful information on this topic...

Using unsupported character codes or pasting in unsupported formatting may work in some cases. However, unsupported text is not guaranteed to continue working indefinitely. It may be removed or loose formatting in future updates as changes are made.

We do our best not to break things, but some things are not yet supported for a reason, so we can only guarantee that supported formatting will continue to work as future updates are made. If you're using it in a low-profile story, I don't see a big problem with it if you are will to accept the risk, but I wouldn't recommend using unsupported characters in an official, high-profile story.

Also, we're getting close, so there's not long to wait. We're still on track to get this out before the end of the year... 🙂

The ability to use superscript and subscript formatting—in addition to many other text editing enhancements—was added in yesterday's update to ArcGIS StoryMaps.
