Custom marker for bulleted lists

At the moment we can choose between two list styles; bulleted and numbered. A bulleted list uses the traditional bullet point symbol (a solid circle):

However, I'd like to be able to use other symbols, such as an empty checkbox (☐) or a square:

Similarly, there might be cases where we would want to use a different type of ordered list. Such as an ordered list with letters:

a. example
b. example
c. example

Or roman numerals:

i. example
ii. example
iii. example
