topic Using GIS for river slope in ArcGIS Spatial Analyst Questions

I am working on a project in which I'd like to determine which locations along a river channel are most likely to produce an avulsion (the river overtopping its bank and flowing into a new channel)--basically, unstable locations where the slope changes dramatically from a shallow slope to a steep slope. I have used the slope tool and flow direction tool, but those only give you values at each point, not between each point. I want to generate a raster that shows me change in slope from north to south (the river in question flows from north to south).

Another issue is that I would like to constrain the analysis to only include the river channel, not the surrounding areas. I considered making a polyline shape file around the river channel as a buffer.

Thoughts?
