It does create a layer for the hillshade, but it isn't like a normal raster. Looking at the layer source, it exists as a ".afr" file in a temp folder. When I go to that location, the afr is nowhere to be seen.

When trying to export the data frame as a Tiff the option to write GeoTIFF tags is greyed out - a problem I've come across before, but have since forgotten if this can be resolved.

I really like the mutli-directional hillshade function ERSI is testing. I'm wondering if there's any way the hillshade can be exported as a referenced raster?

It seems to exist as a layer, but is just displaying the input raster in another layer (?).

It's one of the few things ESRI has actually done to improve ArcMap, but limited if it can't be used as spatial data outside ArcMap.

I don't know much about that functionality.Does it not create a layer or give you an option to somewhere?

If not, one way to go might be to export what you see in data view as a geotiff. Turn off or remove everything you don't want to include, then use Export Map from the File menu, select Tif as the file type and try the various settings.
