topic relative height, altitude above depth line in ArcGIS Spatial Analyst Questions

Hi,
does anyone know how to manage this problem with spatial analyst? Unfortunately nobody could help me in the extension forum...
I am using ArcView 10 and making my first steps with the Spatial Analyst. How can I extract the relative height above depth lines from a DEM? I think it is called something like "altitude above channels" in other GIS. I tried the hydrology tools but with no result. Some studies mention the Focal Statistics but I´m not sure how to proceed with this tools. I received concave and convex structures, but I need the height in metres above the local depth lines.

In general, which procedures of preprocessing a DEM are recommended for this analysis in addition to "Fill sinks"? Thanks!

Greets Ulli
