ArcGIS Pro crashes when starting

Hi,

We have a strange problem that is affecting only some users. It doesn't affect them all the time, but very often it does.

When they open ArcGIS Pro, it crashes right when opening a project or creating a new project. We are using Pro 3.1.1.

In our test environment we have 3.3.5, and when giving access to those users to the test environment, Pro crashes directly when they start it.

We tried using config settings for these users like described here:

Manage application settings—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation

in order to remove any references to OneDrive, because OneDrive is currently used as the default location for projects and the default.gdb, while this is advised against by Esri. However, this does not seem to help. And when I took over a session from the user, and started Pro "as another user" with my own account, it also crashed. But if I start a regular session, I never encounter this problem myself, neither do most other users.

Any brilliant ideas?

I'd check the dump/crash files to see if that leads to any revelations.

\AppData\Local\ESRI\ErrorReports
But worth googling for error if that's changed.

Windows event viewer would be a go-to for me also.

There's this but unsure if you can even open pro to enable it in the first place, chicken and egg situation. But it does seem to mention a cmd line option which might be viable.

I'd also check the install requirements (incl. OS and software, .NET etc.) also if it's possibly set to look for a GPU it can't find etc. Is the application packaged by your Org? maybe also check the registry entries for any old references or outdated license server info. Step 1. Have someone who has never logged into the computer with the problem (i.e., crash when project open) login, navigate to the project, and open the project with noissues?

If the answer is YES, then the issue is with the Frist user's profile. Delete the folder C:\Users\<user id of the person with the problem>\AppData\Local\ESRI\ArcGISPro; reboot and have them try again.

Step 2. IF the new person and the old person have the same issue (project crashes ArcGIS Pro) then we know where the problem is...don't we? ;-). Most likely the project is trying to connect to a 'partially' unreachable Feature class OR references a printer that is a hung state. In both cases ArcGIS Pro can 'find' the FC or Printer, but cannot communicate past that point.

I have some more information.

First, I realise I forgot to mention we use ArcGIS Pro on Citrix VDI machines. The specs are conform ESRI requirements.

The issue seems related to hardware. Today I started ArcGIS Pro in a Citrix session on the laptop of one of the users who suffers from this (this took some time since our users work all over the country), and I reproduced the crash. When I took over the same Citrix session on my own laptop, Pro didn't crash. When I took it back, it crashed again.

When starting the Citrix session on the user's laptop, I received this error (so that's before I started Pro):

This took some time, but likely it is a hardware/driver/Citrix problem. We suspect a combination of hardware (newer HP laptops have the problem, older laptops don't), Intel graphics driver and Citrix Workspace app.

When starting the Citrix Workspace app in a browser window, the problem doesn't manifest itself, so for the time being that is the workaround for users (offering a newer laptop is not going to help now, since it's the newer ones that have the problem). Hopefully either a new Intel driver or a newer version of the Workspace app will solve the issue in the near future.

A clean uninstall and reinstall would be a good first step, failing that it would be worth reaching out to your local Esri Distributor for their assistance
