Read Only fields: Is this a bug or expected behavior?

I am using ArcGIS Pro 3.2

Last week, I set all the fields in one feature class in a map as Read Only in preparation for sharing it to the portal where I don't want any to edit the data. Today, when I went to work on the map, I saw a data error that I wanted to correct. I made sure editing was turned on and clicked on the cell to edit. Nothing happened. I couldn't edit the cell directly. Then I tried Calculate Field. When the tool opened, the target field was not the one I was trying to edit. I changed it to the field I wanted to edit, and proceeded to make and save the edit. When I tried to edit another field, the same thing happened. Not trusting this weirdly behaving layer, I started to investigate. Then I remembered that I had set all fields to Read Only.

I came across this behavior by accident, but now I am concerned. I thought that Read Only protected a field from being edited (except if one manually went into Data Design and turned off Read Only). Is Calculate Field supposed to be able to edit Read Only fields?

If you’re worried about possible issues the bug may create (for the time-being), try publishing the service as a map image layer. This will keep your popups functional but “should” avoid the ability to edit.
