ArcGIS Pro opening up 'blank'

Normally ArcGIS Pro opens to the last map/layout I was on and showing the tabs for other items that were open at the time I did a save and close. Lately though Pro has been opening up to a 'blank' screen (see screenshot) with none of my maps or other items showing as open. This doesn't happen all the time but periodically. I can't say definitively if this is related to a single project or if it happens across multiple as I haven't logged the behavior consistently enough but I feel like I've seen this with multiple projects of different sizes Ultimately, I can reopen any of my maps or layout and i haven't noticed any lost any work so its sort of a benign issue, but it is different from expected behavior which always troubles me. Anyone else running into this or have thoughts as to why?

Thanks Dan, I noticed my display cache was over 8gb on this particular project so cleared that out and marked it to clear each time I close now, so I'll see if that makes a difference before going on to other solutions.
