Bar Chart background doesn't rotate properly with map frame.

I've made some Bar Chart symbols for some data that I was fairly happy with. They display "hits" at different depth intervals of a borehole. They display like this:

But when I rotate the data frame to produce a map (it needs to be rotated), they look like this:

The white is controlled by the Leader Line Background Symbol Color setting.

Changing the "Rotate point and polygon labels when map is rotated" doesn't seem to change this behavior.

So, any way to fix this?
