Unknown image in my Layout

Using ArcGIS Pro, I don't know what an image is that I find in my layout, nor how to remove it. I am not permitted to paste it here for you to see so I must describe it...

It has a small black square dot in the middle surrounded on four sides (left, right, above, and below) by short black lines. There is also a yellow hallo around each of these 5 black components. It seems to be located in a random spot in the layout and I cannot select, move, or otherwise affect it. It does not change size when zooming in or out of the layout.

What is it and how do I remove it?

You might start by turning Layout elements on and off one at a time in the Contents pane of the Layout. If an element disappears, that is the culprit.

have you got another Map Frame? Could maybe be an extent indicator linked to that other frame.
