Can't append data in edit session, even though I am in one

I'm in ArcPro 3.3.1 and I'm trying to import my data into a new Parcel Type in Parcel Fabric. But I can't run the Append tool because it keeps giving me this error:

I have the whole feature dataset in my map, with editing clearly turned on.

If i turn editing off, the tool gives me a notification saying to turn it back on. And I do. But it still fails.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try making a dummy edit, e.g. create a new feature, to start the edit session. After running append you can delete the dummy feature. You have Enable Editing ON which makes tools enabled but the edit session isn't actually started until after that first edit.

Please let me know if this works as a workaround.
