Hi there,

I am using polygons to create a map where there are 3 values so 3 colours used. on the map display i dont want a border around the polygon as it doesnt look nice. however i still want to have the border in the legend to make it look clean. The only way i know is to create the legend while the map display has borders on the polygons and then select convert to graphics. then i can go back to the contents pane and remove the borders from the map but they obviously remain in the legend. this is long as i have to do this everytime i change something that effects the legend. Is there a better way to do this?

Yes there is. One way you can do this is to have the layer duplicated in the same map but leave one layer checked in the legend and the other in the display.
