Hi All,

With the move by ESRI to begin to host National Heritage List Datasets for the UK, my company are looking at using this for all projects moving forward as it saves having the data on our systems and constantly having to check that its updated.

The way we work is we would have a project boundary with a buffer (typically 1km) on 'assets' we have to look at in our assessments. Is there a way to filter the hosted data to the buffer using SQL? I am no SQL wizard but can ST_Intersects be used?

Unfortunately, you can't use spatial query functions in a definition query. If you owned the hosted layer, you'd be able to set a spatial filter on a view layer, but that's not an option here.

Are there any attributes in the dataset that can get you "close enough"? Is the issue that you need to filter the data for performance, or simply for the visual simplicity of not showing features outside the project boundary?

For the latter, check out using masking to hide features based on their spatial relationship to another layer.
