I just upgraded from ArcCatalog 10.5.1 to 10.8.2. I am having an issue connecting to a SQL Server database (was having same issue in 10.5.1). The following message is what I'm getting.

I created a Universal Data Link and can successfully connect to the SQL Server database in question, using the same userid/password that I'm using in ArcCatalog.

Any ideas ?

Brian

How do you know which SQL Server Native Client ArcGIS is using if you have multiple Native Client versions installed on your computer?

I ask because I do not see any reference to a SQL Server Native Client in the Path environmental variable like I would see for an Oracle Client where order in the Path environmental variable is important in determining which Oracle Client is being used?

So the OLE DB connection is a read-only connection to a database where you can see tables. It is not designed for editing of FC's and such. Only to view tables. That's why you cannot set them as a data source for your layers in the TOC. I was curious to see if the OLE DB connection would work and it appears to. Now we have to figure out why can't connect using DB connections.
