ArcGIS Pro 2.4.0 Merge Tool not working

I am attempting to merge 6 polyline layers into one new layer. I've tried several time either with new feature or existing feature. I can't get any farther than the Use Template checkbox and the dropdown below it. The Merge button is not enabled. I've done this with older versions of Pro but cannot get it to work now.

Hi David,

It sounds like you are trying to merge features from different layers. The Merge tool on the Edit tab can only merge features from the same layer. https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/help/editing/merge-features-into-one-feature.htm

Perhaps you want to use the Merge or the Merge Layers geoprocessing tools:

I am having a similar problem which is driving me crazy so i hope this is the right place for help.

I am trying to merge polygons as i edit a layer of geological boundaries.

see the first attatched image,

i want to merge the brown and grey polygons together. the merge tool has an icon that shows 2 small polygons becoming a single polygon. great! i run this tool specifying which attribute i want to keep for the new feature...

so i hit run... and this is the result>

as you can see the polygons are visually merged, but the outlines of the original grey polygon are still there!

so it has just applied attributes but not merged. if this polygon has an outline colour you can still see the original feature. this is not a merge.

i know that the dissolve tool exists but this requires outputting to a new feature class which i do not (will not) do everytime i need to do this. there are numerous time that i do edits of this sort and if i made a new feature class everytime the database would soon become enourmous!

is this a bug?

am i missing something?

Hi Nigel,

I can't reproduce with my own polygons in a similar configuration. It seems like there could be a geometry issue with the data. See this help article: Checking and repairing geometries—Data Management toolbox | ArcGIS Desktop

If that's not it, then we would likely need to see the data. If you want, and the data is relatively small, please send a Map Package that contain the polygons to me sharris@esri.com - or you can open a case with Esri Technical Support Esri Support Contact Support who can set up a way to transfer large datasets.

HI,

I had a check on the link about checking and repairing geometries.

It states that

“When shapefiles are loaded into a geodatabase, the features' geometries are copied as they are (with any existing geometry problems), so the same precaution that is needed when using shapefile data must be taken into account when using geodatabase feature classes. The exception to this is when the data is loaded to an enterprise geodatabase. Geoprocessing tools (including, but not limited to, Feature Class To Feature Class<https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/tool-reference/conversion/feature-class-to-feature-class.htm>, Feature Class To Geodatabase<https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/tool-reference/conversion/feature-class-to-geodatabase.htm>, and Append<https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/tool-reference/data-management/append.htm>) will check and repair the feature's geometry as part of the loading process.”

So as all my data exists in and is being edited within, an enterprise database, this should not be an issue right?

Hi Nigel,

Hmm... it seems that geometry should be ok then. It's a bit difficult to tell what could be going on from just a few screenshots. What happens if you export the data or a subset of the data to a file geodatabase, does the same thing happen? Without having access to more information and/or the data itself, I can only speculate
