Model builder: Add join tool outputs to temporary layer only

I am in model builder trying to add a join to a layer stored in my SDE, but rather than add the join to the actual layer in SDE, it is adding the join to a temporary layer. This is causing a problem for me because I am using a join to remove orphaned records from the layer in SDE.

I am not sure if this would have anything to do with it, but when validate the join in the "Add Join" tool, I get these errors:

When I run the model, it does not error out. Thank you in advance for your help!

joins are temporary in add join Add Join (Data Management)—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation

with join field they aren't Join Field (Data Management)—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation

maybe it is the temporary layer with the temporary join that is the issue
