ArcGIS Pro fails to connect to the “root” hard drive (D partition),

ArcGIS Pro fails to connect to the “root” hard drive (D partition),

I couldn’t figure out why the ArcGIS Pro fails to connect to the “root” hard drive (D partition) the same way the ArcMap does.

What might be the issue here?

Hey Jamal, I'm not really understanding the question. Your screenshot seems to show ArcGIS Pro connected to the D drive.

Sorry for the confusion.

The screenshot below shows that the ArcMap can be connected to the ROOT partition “D”.

This appears not to be possible in ArcGIS Pro. Connecting to the ROOT partition “D” is impossible.

Could you please show in a screenshot that the ArcGIS Pro can connect to the a ROOT partition?

Oh ok, this is not possible in ArcGIS Pro. In fact, the help file states "ArcGIS Pro does not support adding folder connections to the project that access the root node of any disk, for example, C:\ or D:\."

I hope that this incapability will be enhanced in the upcoming releases. All the time we need to know where is our data stored in the hard drive. It is very inconvenient that the ArcGIS Pro is not able to display the root drive as it used to do in the ArcGIS Desktop.

by design... but you could ask around internally to see if there is a reason, other than it just isn't a good idea and guessing wildly... pro wants to make folders relative to the project itself...which is pretty hard if tthe project is in the root

So just to be clear is the folder your trying to connect to is a share folder off of a server: If so when defining the location of the "folder" put the machine name in the search.

example. Our data is on a server with a share folder called shape files. In ArcMap the mapped drive is S:\

the actual path of the data is \\clc-esri-02\ shapefiles....but all you see in ArcMap is the mapped drive of S:\

So If you connect directly to the server by typing in the path at the Add folder connection the folder is listed.

I'm just now learning Pro. This is crazy. Yeah, the UNC work-around is acceptable, but why can't you connect to a root folder ?!?!? A lot of our staff refer to \\fileserver\shared as "The G Drive". Is there a good reason for this restriction, ESRI?

Unacceptable. We structure entire drives (in-workstation and portable) to list GIS project folders...hundreds of them, hanging off the root.

For me, I’m still waiting such enhancement. We can’t live without being able to connect to the root. We are now in Pro 2.0 and it is not there

At ArcGIS Pro BETA 2.1, you cannot connect to the root directory. In the BETA help it states, "ArcGIS Pro does not support adding folder connections to the project that access the root node of any disk, for example, C:\ or D:\."

This appears not to be fixed even in 2.3. it fails to connect to the rood drive C:\ or D:\

Does this mean that I need to connect to each single folder in the D:\ to be able to access it? Waste of time and efforts?

Jamal - in fact this has been fixed for 2.3 AGP. From the File Explorer, drag your C: drive to the Folders item in the Catalog Pane and release. Now you have root access to the C: drive or any other drive for that matter.

This is great that we can now connect to the root drive!

Two points:

1) Why do I need to drag\drop from Windows explorer to Pro? Why the Pro is not able to connect itself to the root drive without the need to drag\drop. ArcMap used to connect to the root without the need to drag\drop

2) Pro loses the connection with the root each time new aprx file is created! ArcMap preserves the connection all the time

Hi Jamal - great to hear! Connect away! So with regard to your 2 points:

1. Not sure as to the why it's done this way. Perhaps an AGP Developer watching this thread can chime in.

2. If you want AGP to remember the root drive always in new *.aprx's, right click on the C: root drive and select Add to New Projects. Then every time you create a new project, the C: drive is there. You can also create favorites using the same workflow of a right-click and select Add to Favorites. Then in the Catalog Pane towards the top, click Favorites to the right of Portal and to the left of History and select those folder/connections you wish to see in the *.aprx.
