For group templates, as long as all of the layers that were used to create the group template are saved in a layer file or map file, it should work. This means if you want use a layer file, you should first create a Group Layer that contains all of those layers that make up the group template, and save the layer file from it.

Reference:

Save a layer file—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop

Save a map file—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop

Does this help?

-Scott

GIS administrator wants to consolidate all individually created feature templates into a single Pro Project. Is it possible to export/import feature templates between Pro projects?

Cheers,

Vish
