topic Font character point symbol unwanted automatic vertical centering? in ArcGIS Pro Questions

I made up a custom font with some symbols to be used in Arc Pro and ArcMap as point symbols. Some of the symbols are multiple "letters" to be put together to form a single point symbol (like a highway shield). What I'm seeing is that Arc Pro and ArcMap both automatically vertically centers every font symbol instead of using their actual "location" in the font. So I get:

instead of by default.

Note the symbols aren't automatically centered horizontally (red dot is center) though.

I'm a total newbie at making fonts, so I tried my font in Word (lined up OK), and also checked the Georgia font, where some letters and numbers appear "dropped" in regular use:

1279

But in the point symbology if you add them as marker layers they are centered vertically instead of respecting the vertical font position:

Is there a setting somewhere to adjust this or do I have to apply a Y offset manually to every symbol I define?

Thanks
