What inputs do you use in the split tool?

Every time I attempt to use the split tool, it does not accept my input for the split field. I wish that the possible split fields appeared in a drop down list, or that I could browse for options. Even when I spell the field correctly, it does not accept it, and I an unable to receive help from ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Help. Has anyone else had this problem with Split before?

The features must be a polygon and the split field must be character/text

Split—Help | ArcGIS Desktop

split_features	Polygon features containing a tabular field whose unique values are used to split the input features and provide the output feature classes' names.	Feature Layer
split_field	The character field used to split the input features. This field's values identify the split features used to create each output feature class. The split field's unique values provide the output feature classes' names.	Field

ESRI's help articles are about as helpful as a fork is for eating soup. I am having the same problem. It's cryptic, to say the least. Appropriate values for that field remain elusive to me, and I can basically no longer use the Split tool in ArcPro like I did in ArcMap.
