Adding error messages to the error inspector as to why a "fix" cannot be applied would significantly improve my experience with error inspector. After much fussing, it was determined that my features could not merge my overlap because I had failed to enable the "editable" check box in my contents pane. This is definitely user error, however a message displaying "this layer is not editable" would have considerably simplified my troubleshooting. I spent a considerable amount of time attempting to refresh my software, clear my cache, re-validate my topology, verifying coordinate systems, running a repair geometry, etc, to learn that all I failed to do what click a box. What was especially frustrating was that I had clicked merge and GIS in no way indicated it could not complete the merge, it acted like it did it, but never triggered an edit.
