Ask to save changes when closing Fields, Domains views

Add a 'save changes' dialog when closing the Fields and Domains views. Currently you can close them without saving your changes, and there is no other indication that you have fields/domains that are unsaved once you close.

Hey there. This dialog does exist for all of the data design views, are you not seeing this?

The views are all connected, so if you have Fields, Domains, and Contingent Values all open, this dialog won't come up as you close them until the last one is closed.

@wayfaringrob setting this to Needs Clarification given Jonathan's comment and the fact that the 'Unsaved Changed Found' dialog already exists for these views.

Can you provide more details about a situation where you are closing a view with changes and not seeing this dialog?

@JonathanMurphyI see. I'm not exactly sure why I wasn't seeing it before but it is appearing now. It would be great if each individual view asked you as it's not clear when the box comes up what, exactly, it's asking to save changes to then. Further, I just closed a fields view (with pending changes) before closing a domains view (changes already saved); upon closing the domains view, the box did come up, but I'm stuck in a loop with it - clicking "yes" doesn't do anything, the box just comes back up.

For others who have given this idea kudos, note that we have it set to Needs Clarification. @Marie_Ducharme @Bud @CynthiaGeskes can you review the discussion on this idea and let us know specifically how you get into a state where you are not seeing the 'Unsaved Changes Found' dialog?

Here's one scenario that comes to mind:

In Pro 2.6.8, if you click X to close Pro, it doesn't prompt you to save field changes or warn you that there are unsaved field changes. It only prompts you to save the project. It doesn't matter if you choose yes or no to save the project, the field changes won't be saved.

Not sure about newer versions.

Out of curiosity, why not open the dialog when the first unsaved tab is closed, rather than the last?

We're re-opening this idea with the following as the two main points:

1. Investigate the ability to display the save schema dialog when closing individual views rather than the last of a series of linked views.

2. Investigate the ability to display the save schema dialog when closing a project.

@SSWoodward Hey I'm just seeing this and might be a little late to the party. I found this thread when looking to see if my idea to add a save button to the fields window already existed. My thought is that adding a "save" button to the Fields pane will simply remind the user that they may want to save before closing the window. Currently it is easy to be making edits to the fields and change which Tab of the Ribbon you are looking at. You then must go back to the correct tab if you want to save it without closing the fields pane. Let me know if this doesn't make sense!Mock up of added save button.Currently you must be have the correct tab open in the ribbon in order to save.

Thank you for the comment @LarsArneson This idea was asking to provide a dialog or prompt to save changes in design views (Fields View, Domains View, etc.) when closing. That will be delivered in ArcGIS Pro 3.1. Example:

Adding a Save button (and other buttons) into the view itself as opposed to only having it on the ribbon would be a different request. It would be related to https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-pro-ideas/move-table-fields-domains-ribbons-to-appropriate/idi-p/1141375 in the case where a view is pulled away from the main application:

In terms of usability/mouse-travel, I also want to make sure everyone is aware of the right-click context menu in the design views:

@KoryKramer Awesome, thanks for the quick response. I looked at the other idea and it is more relevant. I will comment on it. I am aware of the right click to save, the button idea is more to add a visible reminder that your edits aren't saved if the button is colored.

I love the "Customize Quick Access Toolbar" because I can save my work at any point, it doesn't matter what window/pane/ribbon I have open. This is very helpful when I'm working on something that might crash the program and I'm wanting to save often.

@LarsArneson I'm right there with ya on QAT. It's a good workaround to the constant disappearing/moving/switching of ribbon commands.

It sounds like this should be taken care of by 3.1 but I wanted to share another quirk I discovered; I had 2 tables open, and then I opened the fields view for both. I copied the field schema for one field and pasted it into the other as a new field. When I closed the fields view for the table I pasted into, it did not prompt for a save even though it was the only non-table view associated with the feature class. It was when I closed the fields view that I copied from (but made no edits/no "*" in the title) that I got asked to save. This is confusing, since I didn't make any changes to the view I was closing.

Update: even when I click 'Yes' to this popup, the unchanged view remains open and does not close, stuck in a loop. The only solution was to re-open the Fields view in which I pasted, close the one from which I copied first, and then close the one in which I pasted.
