I wanted to confirm some APR behavior with regards to Pipeline Relocations with different LRS configurations…

When the LRS is configured as a Continuous network only, it appears there is no option to preserve the abandoned section of the pipeline route (from the reroute take-off point to the reroute tie-in point); the entire pre-edit route gets archived with an EffectiveToDate populated.
When the LRS is configured as an Engineering network with derived Continuous, there is an option to preserve the abandoned section of the pipeline route (from the reroute take-off point to the reroute tie-in point) and move to it to a new ID/Name.

Is this behavior by design?

We often see pipeline operators who wish to use only a 1 Continuous Network but also have a requirement to keep Abandoned sections of pipe. It seems the APR behavior does not support this scenario?

@JAM LRS configuration with Engineering network (referred to as Line Network in APR documentation) offers additional functionality like relocate with abandoned section, option to recalibrate downstream or not in a single workflow. The topic is discussed in detail at Realign routes

APR users with a single network can still preserve the abandoned section by a combination of Realign Route and Reassign route .

@JAM In the Realign tool, when you select the option to "Reassign to abandoned route(s)", the tool will reassign the abandoned section to a new route on an entirely new line. Since you are not using a network with line support, I suspect this is the reason the option isn't available.

If you use a single network and select the option to enable line support when you configure your network, you should be able to realign routes as expected. Just because your network supports lines doesn't mean a derived network has to be configured.
