Are you able to georeference a photo file within ArcGIS Online, similar to way you can in ArcGIS stand alone?

Do you mean that you want to draw a point on the map and associate a photo with that point? You can do that in ArcGIS Explorer Online by adding a "note" to the map then associating a URL to a photo with the note.

Sort of. I'm trying to overlay an aerial photo over a basemap, and by associating 4 opposing points, the photo then becomes the same relative size as the basemap. Does that make sense? I can do it at work on ArcGIS stand alone, but can't seem to do it on the online version.

Sorry, ArcGIS.com doesn't have the ability to georeference images.

I've not tried this myself but...

You might try building your own image transformation and putting it in a "World file". This is a text file that defines a coordinate transformation between the image and a real world coordinate system...

Jeff,

other alternative is to use Georeferencing add-in that I've written for ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. It uses simple georeferencing algorithm that requires three input points (connecting image points to map points). Once "links" are defined, world file and projection files will be created.

The georeferencing tool is great! I'm new to writing code for ArcGIS Explorer (but am fairly good with VBA) and was wondering if I could have a peek at the code to see how it works. It would give me a good head start.

I'm trying to develop something that would "georeference" oblique photos. In other words, I'd like to bring them into Explorer, have the user move them relative to each other, and then push a button to georeference the corners so we could save these relative locations.

Georeferencing has not been implemented in ArcGIS Online. However, ArcGIS Pro supports georeferencing. Georeferencing tools—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop. As far as I know, there are no plans to implement georeferencing in ArcGIS Online. You might submit an idea to solicit more feedback on this feature. https://community.esri.com/community/arcgis-ideas

I'm currently visiting a remote community that have no GIS experts so I am trying to give them a little bit of training using just AGOL to get them into the world of GIS. Would have been great if we could have integrated georeferrencing as this is a functionality they have asked about. I guess once they have a handle on AGOL someone can start looking at ArcMap. Sadly ArcPro requires to much computer resources for here.
