Alternative to Explorer Online Queries

We were using ARCGIS online with queries built in ARCExplorer:

Now we all know this is no longer available: and this makes ARCGIS online a useless tool .

What good is a paper map on a computer.

This has left us scrambling trying to come up with an available app will allow Querying my layers. And will work inside

and organizational account ?

Don't point to ARCGIS Explorer on line: that does not work and will not after March.

Is ESRI planning on fixing these issues and if so when: hopfully before My account expires on ArcGIS online because there is no reason I can see to renew something that is trash

ESRI (Andrew Stauffer) took the time and showed my how to use the address locator function within ARC Catalog to build a Composite
address layer, and to post it in services layer to allow for querying of my data within an organizational account. This allows the bypassing of ARCEXPLORER for building queries for use within ARCGIS on-line.

We had 5 feature classes that we wanted to be able to search for individual features on so we did the following:

1. Create a Locator in Desktop for each Feature Class
a. Use the General Single Field Locator style
b. Set data as Primary
c. Define field to search on as 'KeyField'

2. Create a new Composite Locator
a. Add the Locators you created in Step 1.

3. Publish the Composite Locator to ArcGIS for Server

4. Log into ArcGIS Online
a. Edit Settings
b. Utility Services
c. Add Geocoding Service and save

5. Test searches in Browser based and Mobile applications
a. Adjust locator sensitivity as needed (Min Match Score and Spelling)

Is it possible to publish the Geocode Service to your organizations Hosted Services rather than to ArcGIS for server.

Hi Brian,

Unfortunately you cannot publish locators to ArcGIS Online at this time. If you do not currently have ArcGIS for Server, you can still create the queries using Explorer Online directly at http://www.arcgis.com/explorer when creating a new or opening an older existing map. (New maps created or saved in the Map Viewer will not open in Explorer.)

that's a cool workaround for custom searches in the AGOL apps until something better comes out, thanks.

we're already experimenting with some lightweight services for AGOL Org accounts using Arc2Earth, so I decided to build your workaround into a full service without the need for an ArcGIS Server. You point the service back at any Feature Service you have hosted in your AGOL account, set a few options and voila, simple search on multiple feature services.

Hi. I like the idea of using custom locators in AGOL to simulate queries. Unfortunately, I'm getting "The geocode service URL you have entered is invalid or inaccessible" when I try to add mine to agol. I know the service is accessible and the URL works in a browser and works in ArcMap.

But, I did not create and publish a composite locator. Is that what's missing for mine to work?

thanks, and yes, I'd be very surprised if you weren't building those features into the core. It's a stopgap for now until they're available natively in AGOL but also (at least in the case of Basemaps) as a way for older ESRI apps to use the tile layers (re ArcMap 9.3, 10 etc). Going forward, this infrastructure is more of a way for us to integrate external services into AGOL. it's just that in the short term, it could also be helpful for simple stuff in AGOL (like search)

Great! replacing a well used product without a piratical alternative to support the existing functionalities. Are you serious? Guess what I'm going to look around for other 3rd party solutions now.
