Hi Josh -

Question on this - I followed the overall workflow - published from Pro using the 'Editable' option (worked as a webmap for most layers and symbols/labels), then did Add and Open in Pro using the webmap - looks fine. Tried the Save Webmap after adding a new layer from a local (on my HD) layer in a GDB. It seems to want to re-create the Web Feature Layer ("_WFL") and it won't allow that unless there is a unique ID. I thought checking the 'Archive the last updated web map' would timestamp the WFL and basically just update the webmap - but maybe this isn't the case. In any event - I'd love to be able to work in Pro, add new local feature layers and push changes as hosted feature layers to AGO. But maybe this isn't possible? It seems like maybe you're suggesting that you need to publish a service or layer before you add it to the webmap in Pro? That would seem duplicative at best. But then - it's esri, so duplication might just be the name of the game....

Thanks for any help/insight.

Once a web map is published, you need to find it in the Catalog. Right-click your map and select "add and open". This map maintains its link to the web map, and the sharing tab will give you the option to "save web map".

Yes, you've pretty much nailed it. Once the map is published, you can get rid of the original map from Pro and work exclusively with the web map.

When you shared the web map, it sounds as though you may have created a map image layer rather than a web map. Map Image Layers can't be updated, they just need to be replaced, which makes them very obnoxious when you have symbology changes to make.

Unless they were map image layers to begin with? In which case, there's not really a nice and easy way to update those. But if you're wanting to make symbology changes to feature layers, the still ought to be feature layers in the saved map.

What I would suggest:

Publish all your layers to your portal however they need to be published

Add the published services to your map

Do "share as web map"

If you try to use "share as web map" with local layers, the process will need to publish those as well, and that can lead to trouble. When you share as a web map with already-published layers, things should go a little more like you expect.

I was probably just undercaffeinated, but I had a heckuva time figuring out how to save the webmap back to the portal (I'm using Enterprise, but I think it's the same as AGOL).
