Why can't the mapping applications handle different projections? The web map handles it fine. Does ESRI have any plans to make their mapping applications function as well as the web map? Or are we basically just out of luck. We'd like our users to have the option to use either type of basemap. (Which by the way they could if they were to view it in the web map version.) We talked to the agency that is supplying the non-web mercator basemaps we are using and they fear they would have to duplicate 3 terabytes of data in order to supply us with web mercator versions of those same basemaps. It would really be great if the mapping applications could just handle it on the fly.

Ahh I see - should have noticed that I was just looking for errors in the debug console. The Basic Viewer uses the Basemap Gallery widget from the JSAPI to display the basemaps. One of the restrictions on the basemap's in the gallery is that they all need to share the same spatial reference. You can find more details here:

http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/jsapi/#basemapgallery
