Field Maps "Editing disabled" error despite editing enabled in settings

Hi ESRI community,

I'm running into an issue and am wondering if this is a bug or there's a weird catch I'm not getting here. I've created a webmap with several empty feature layers imported from ArcPro. All of the layers are editable except for one, despite the fact that I have enabled editing in the settings for each one. I was randomly running into issues saving the form when I was building it, but those issues seemed to resolve themselves when I enabled editing from the settings panel of the feature layer. Now when I try to uncheck and reselect the enable editing settings, I get another error message that the saved changes cannot be completed. Maybe I didn't check a box before sharing from ArcPro? I get this error message when editing the form in designer (screenshot attached):

Layer editing

Editing is disabled on one or more layers. However, your privileges allow you to edit any layer in the map.

Has anyone else run into this issue or have thoughts as to what's going on here? Thanks in advance.

I have made the webmap available for offline, editable in collector and fieldmaps, all boxes are selected in all layers for editing, it is shared with just me and I am able to edit the other layers from my map on my tablet without issue.

It is an error letting you know that one layer in the webmap doesn't allow editing.

I have tried to enable editing and still get this issue. Is there something else I need to do to get the layer to allow editing?

Hi @AllisonMuench,

Check the editability of the layer in 2 places:

1. The Settings tab on the Item Details Page for the Layer. Also check what types of editing are allowed. If editing is restricted (to Add only for instance), then the alert you see is expected.

2. The Layer Properties in the map

As the layer owner you have privileges to edit the layer whether editing is enabled, restricted, or not enabled at all. The alert is to inform you that your privileges supercede the settings. It is not an error.

Just to clarify, are you able to edit the layer?

The screenshot you have shown is NOT an error. It's a warning/notice that one or more layers in your map are not editable. This gives awareness to you as the map author, that the forms you may be configuring will only be accessible to you as the owner (or admins with full editing privileges).

From your post, it sounds like you have one layer that is non editable, so I would expect this warning message to appear.

It's difficult to assess the other issues you have mentioned or if they are still occurring. I would recommend ensuring you configure your editing first, and then work in one web browser window/tab to create your web map and forms. A majority of issues occur when you're working in multiple tabs and save the Field Maps settings then save the Map Viewer settings. Both these pages commit saved to the web map JSON, so doing them could give conflicts. E.g. if you were seeing the warning on the map after enable editing on all layers, it may just be you needed to refresh the page.

Let us know if this helps and if you are still seeing other issues like the unable to save.

Hi @AllisonMuench,

As mentioned above, the message you are seeing is simply an alert, not an error.You should still be able to edit all of the layers in the map.

Are you able to edit the layer(s)?

Same problem here. All layers are editable, and this stupid message still shows. FMDesigner has some serious bugs. Offline never works for instance.

Could you provide more detail about the issue that you are having?

Are you able to edit the layers that you need to in Map Viewer and /or Field maps?

I can edit the layer (features) in Map Viewer without any issue but cannot add any features for the same layer in Field Maps (though the layer is visible). (There's no '+' symbol at the bottom right to let me add features when in Field Maps.)

That does sound like a problem. I don't know of any bugs that would be causing that. Would you be able to reach out to ESRI support so they can investigate and help identify any bugs? Any information you can provide (including maps or data) could really help us troubleshoot the problem.

Any solutions found for this?

I have a hosted layer and a view layer with editing enabled. Both work fine.

Every additional view layer I create states editing is disabled no matter what combination of editing permissions I add in the settings.

Very frustrating as we are now past the point of wiping the main layer and starting over.

Any resolution for this? I am having the same issue of having edit turned on for the feature layer, but no "+" symbol in Field Maps for our field crews as well.

Oh my gosh. Replying to myself because I came across this issue again a year later and now am trying to solve for this again. It was working a moment ago and now it isn't. In between that time I edited the field display names, re-ordered them, as well as change the title of the pop-up. Now I'm seeing what AllisionMuench has posted in her screenshots. (As an admin, I'm able to edit in Map Viewer but when doing testing in Field Maps under a test account, I cannot edit.) I can't remember for sure but I think the thing I had to do last time was to re-create my view layers. If anyone has ideas on why this might be happening, please feel free to share.
