Overwrite feature layer workflow no longer works

I have a feature layer I regularly overwrite with a JSON file to reflect new data. It's always worked fine.

That layer update workflow no longer works. I get the message that "This file type is not supported." (Screen shot below)

As a test, I created a new feature layer from a JSON file and it worked just fine. But when I tried to overwrite the layer a short while later, using the same file, I get the message "This file type is not supported."

The latest ArcGIS Online update changed the workflow to append data to or update data in a hosted feature layer, or to overwrite the contents of a hosted feature layer.

I'm concerned that the update eliminated the overwrite functionality. Can this be fixed? Thank you for any assistance.
