is it possible to enable the "Shared Update" on an existing group or can it only be set when you first create the group

Hi Stuart,

This setting is only available when creating new groups and when membership in the group is only open to those who are invited or have requested and are approved to join.

To make your group a shared update group, enable the Shared update group designation when creating the group.
