Comments on ArcGIS: An Open Platform for Innovation

dlaw-esristaff‌, normally I wouldn't start my own discussion about someone else's blog post, but comments appear to be disabled on https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/blog/2017/06/12/arcgis-an-open-platform-for-innovation?sr=search&searchId=5950dd71-48f1-4c11-a2a3-b72c2b605c22&searchIndex=0‌.

My open vision includes https://community.esri.com/ideas/13029‌, along with https://community.esri.com/ideas/13080‌. I have nothing against KML, GeoPackage, or any of the other OGC standards that Esri implements, or partially implements, but lack of native GeoJSON support is a glaring hole when it is now a full-blown IETF standard.

Thanks for your feedback. I've checked and it looks like the ability to import GeoJSON into feature services (which was enabled 2-3 years ago) has not resulted into a lot of usage - when compared to KML, CSV, file geodatabase, and shapefiles. Hence, both of the enhancements you referenced have low priority as compared to other enhancement requests. I know the ArcGIS Online team is evaluating this enhancement GeoJSON Layers in AGOL.

dlaw-esristaff‌, thanks for the follow up. I have heard from others that the ArcGIS Online team is "evaluating" the https://community.esri.com/ideas/13029‌ idea. I am glad to hear that you heard the same, hopefully it means it is getting a serious consideration.

Regarding the low usage, I think one could argue a couple points. One, ArcGIS products historically haven't had robust support for GeoJSON when looking across the product line. Adding partial support in one product line isn't going to create a waterfall event because ArcGIS users have been conditioned over time to not use the format. Second, the support that was added to AGOL wasn't native support in that having to load a copy and then publish it to use it in a map is much different than pointing to a URL containing GeoJSON and directly consuming it.

I firmly believe that GeoJSON usage will grow with ArcGIS as the support for GeoJSON improves.
