Flow Direction Arrows - ArcGIS Online

I am hosting my GIS data in ArcGIS Online, not using ArcGIS Server, and when I publish my sewer data (with mains symbolized with flow direction arrows) it does not show up correctly. I published the line as a green line with black arrows. In ArcGIS Online it shows up as a thick black line with no arrows.

Any thoughts on how to get this to work or what may be causing this?

My guess is that the symbol you're using to draw the lines in desktop is not supported when publishing the data to the web.

For line layers, simple line symbols are supported. If other symbols are used, the feature service converts them to a simple line symbol that best represents the original symbol. For example, a cartographic line symbol in the map document may be drawn as a simple solid line in a feature service client. If a line symbol is complex or has multiple layers, the feature service downgrades the line to best represent the original line symbol.

A solution to the symbology problem would be to duplicate your feature service as a map service. You would then overlay your feature service on top the map service giving your self feature access as well as your normal symbology. The down side of this you have another service on AGOL and if you use tiles on your data (which you will probably need), it will consume many credits. Just an option. Hope this helps

I'm having the same issue. I'm publishing to an .sd file and using the FeatureServer URL to create a map service online and when using flow arrows it appears the flow arrows draw a million times per line feature creating a thick black line. Black because that the color of the flow arrows. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I could really use this for our sewer system lines as well. I know it's possible if you have your own server, so why can this not be implemented on AGOL hosted features?

It's a technical limitation. A feature layer (hosted or not) passes the feature geometry to the client app (browser, mobile device, desktop app) and the client draws it. Web browsers don't have the ability to draw complex line symbols.

I think it has something to do with being in a "map image layer", which if I understand correctly is only available if you have your own server.

Yes, map image layers are drawn by the server and return an image of the drawing to a client application. You do need your own server to host a map image layer.

Initially, I added specific service url's to the mxd from another published service.

For example, http://domain/arcgis/rest/services/SanitarySystem/ServiceName/MapServer/10

I had this layer grouped in the mxd with another layer.

Published it using ArcGIS server as the host.

The symbology was ok in the rest end point viewer.

When I added the layer url to a web map on agol, it turned into a solid black line.

I tried adding the group parent url to the web map, but the web map shows an error:

The layer is not a supported type and cannot be added to the map.

Three possible solutions:

add the whole server url to the web map

http://domain/arcgis/rest/services/SanitarySystem/ServiceName/MapServer

One con of doing it this way is that if you have other layers in the web map, the web map places this towards the bottom of the layer list.
The user cannot reorder it.
If there are non-transparent polygons on top of this map service, then it will be covered.

Also, I attempted to remove the unnecessary layers from the web map, but it seems that once you add the MapServer url, you cannot remove the individual index layers of that map service.

Symbolize the line arrow by itself (NOT in a group layer, NOR any other layers in the mxd) in a source mxd.

Publish as a map service using ArcGIS server.

Add the Map service url (http://domain/arcgis/rest/services/SanitarySystem/ServiceName/MapServer) to web map

One con of doing it this way is that if you have other layers in the web map, the web map places this towards the bottom of the layer list.

Do not add the 'http://domain/arcgis/rest/services/SanitarySystem/ServiceName/MapServer /0'

use any basic line symbol at the mxd, with color of choice, and no arrows.

use agol to accomplish arrow symbology

change style

select a drawing style

symbols

Arrow

2 pixels width

choose the arrow pointing to the right (third one down).

I know this is several years after the fact, but for people who are experiencing this problem for the first time, I wanted to let them know that you can symbolize a line feature with a directional arrow in the web map itself.

In the Table of Contents, locate the layer. If needed, expand the service layer to get to the data layer itself. Hover the mouse pointer over the symbols and click on Change Style

In the Change Style window, click on the OPTIONS button:

Click on the blue Symbols text:

Drop-down the Arrow picker and choose the left to right arrow:

Symbolize the line weight and color as you choose. Click Ok, then Ok, and then Done. The symbology should now be visible on the map. **Note that there will only be ONE arrow at the end of the line, not several arrows along the line--that's still not an option as far as I know**

It doesn't look as refined as a cartographic line in an .mxd, but it does the job. The arrows will point in the direction it was digitized in (in this example, we digitize sanitary sewers from high elevation to low elevation, so the arrows point downstream).

Again, I know that this is really late, but it took me several hours a few months ago to figure this out. Hope it helps someone else in the future.

Has the drop-down to choose an arrow gone away?

I ran into this problem yesterday and was happy to find there was a solution--however, in my view of the box above I have no drop-down for an Arrow, only Pattern.

Am I missing something?

Hi Misti, I still see the option for arrows. When you are symbolizing by location only, choose the Options button:

Then click on the Symbols link:

Then Scroll Down:

Drop down the arrow selector and choose the arrow you need:

Click OK when the arrow has been selected:

If you are symbolizing by Unique Type, you need to take this step for each type in the list:

Hover over each line type and click to change the symbol:

Scroll down to see the arrow selector, choose the arrow, and then click OK.

Repeat for each line type.

Has this been fixed? I know you can place arrows at the endpoints, but I really need to be able to place them at intervals along the line. Is that possible to do yet? The problem with using the endpoints is that the area gets really noisy with the node and its label (in our case manholes) and up to four lines connected.

Yo tengo el mismo problema que ustedes. Intento representar el flujo del tráfico de las vías. Es decir el sentido por el que se puede circular. El problema que poniendo solo la flecha al comienzo o al final no lo interpreta bien. Lo suyo sería un patrón de línea con flecha que se repitiera a lo largo de la entidad. (yo no lo he encontrado!)

La solución que yo le he dado, ha sido colocando caracteres ">>", "<<" o "<< >>" en la etiqueta junto al nombre de la calle. Para hacer que se muestre un sentido u otro he creado una expresión con arcade que comprueba el campo sentido. Adjunto imagen por si le ayuda a alguien.

Si se ocurre mejor solución, os agradezco la ayuda.

I have the same issue. Yes, It is possible to change visualization on feature layer item details however, I have a script that regularly updates this feature service so I cannot change the symbology every time the service is updated because it resets the symbology. Any solutions?
