Custom basemap performance (using many underlying layers)

Hello -

My organization is maintaining custom basemap items within an enterprise AGO group - following the "Move to Basemap" workflow described in this article. I have some questions about the performance of adding multiple layers.

For example, having we would have a single "Imagery" basemap option that comprises say 50 or over 100 layers (as moved to the basemap). This allows us to abstract things like image services and public WMS for the user, integrating them into this one option.

Are there any performance issues one might expect with having a large number of layers within a single AGO item? Is this a sustainable approach? Is there such thing as having too many? Or a limit that can be added to the underlying basemap?
