Update Data on Feature Layer

We have a feature layer that is in a Web Application. This application has many people working in it and making additions to this layer in the application. We have data that needs to be appended to this layer as the people work. Meaning we can not republish and have the chance of losing any information that has been added. It is just to stressful. We have tried the update data tool but have not quite been able to get it to work. Is there a place to show steps on using the tool or can you please give instructions. We would more than likely be using an excel or geodatabase.

This the Update Data Layer button on your feature layer in ArcGIS Online. There is no place to put a python code? You choose a layer and continue. We are choosing a layer with the exact same fields and it doesn't let us continue.
