Presently, layer packages can only be uploaded and downloaded (to be viewed in ArcGIS Desktop and Explorer). There is no support for viewing the layer package in a web application. This is something we're working on. When we do release this feature it will likely be a premium feature (for a fee).

So what's the point of sharing?I had the same problem just earlier. I came from the Increasing Productivity conference in Austin yesterday all excited about this ArcGIS online and all the whiz-bang connectivity crap they put out; but come to find out there's nothing to it. Our data isn't worth squat and is impossible to share with the "community". Again, what's the point?

I just came from the same seminar in Chicago and there was no mention that you had to have ArcServer for any of the neat stuff that they showed with ArcOnline for "sharing files". Most of that session now seems worthless to most users.
