Good morning, in the Security settings in ArcGIS online there is an option to Allow Portal Access. Can someone explain to me what this does or point me in the direction of additional documentation. The documentation I have found so far is not very helpful at least I am not understanding what it is saying. Or can someone translate it to layman's terms. Any help with this is appreciated.

Configure security settings—ArcGIS Online Help | Documentation

Thanks

Dan Senner

Hey Dan Senner‌,

This setting allows you to set portals that you trust to access your secured content. So if your agency has both an ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Portal, you can set the ArcGIS Online to trust users who are logged into the specified ArcGIS Portal. This means users will only need to login once!

Hope that clears it up for you!

Thanks,

Ben

If this answer was helpful please mark it as helpful. Although I understand what it's supposed to do I can't get it to work.

I have my portal URLs entered into the setting

have registered items from AGOL into these portals, choosing not to include credentials.

My understanding is this will allow members of my portal to use their enterprise logins to access the secure AGOL content when viewing it from these portals.

However, when accessing the content I'm asked to log in to AGOL. When using portal SAML credentials I can't do so....

This has been driving me crazy since it seems like exactly the thing I need to work, but every bit of documentation doesn't actually explain anything and all the posts from users feel like AI regurgitations of the unhelpful documentation as if just repeating it makes any sense.

"This setting allows you to set portals that you trust to access your secured content."

How?! Is any user of my portal suddenly able to view all secured content items even when they aren't shared? That seems insane. If it's sharing based on users how is this mapped? Can I share an AGOL item to a specific Portal User? Does it just mean visibility of the content pages so I can see there's a secured item but not actually use that item? Can I share the actual item? There's a ton of questions regarding this feature, how to use it, what does it actually do and I can find nothing about what it actually is.

I would love to use this feature too. I don't understand why ESRI makes this so difficult. Do the users have to have identical logins or tenant in the case of Azure SSO? I would love for my Portal users to be able to login to our AGOL content without me making them a separate AGOL account.
