At 10.1, do you need to pay for an ArcGIS Server license to be able to use ArcGIS Online as the host for web services? In other words, I want to be able to publish web services without having to purchase a license of ArcGIS Server. If that is indeed possible, what are the subscription rates/levels for ArcGIS Online?

I am too confused about the costs. The lowest I see is 2500.00 and I can't tell if that is a 1 time cost or yearly. My service seems to be working the way it did before without signing up for the 1 month trail or buying the package. What about hobby use. I can't dish out 2500 right now,

Each subscription includes a certain number of users and service credits and has to be renewed annually. As you use the system, credits get consumed. Effectively, your cost is based on your usage of the system, with 2500 credits currently the minimum renewal rate. If you need more credits, you can purchase them. Technical support is also included with a subscription.

Credit consumption can be grouped into 3 broad categories:

Storage - the amount of disk space required to store your data

Computation - basically like CPU usage, which currently covers tile creation and geocoding

Bandwidth - how much network traffic is consumed to access your data and services

This is a somewhat simplified description of pricing. Contact the regional office closest to you for more details.

Existing beta users have been transitioned to trial subscriptions, I believe. As I understand it, you should be contacted by Esri before the expiration date about converting your trial to a subscription.

Is there a more specific response, like how does 1 credit get used.

So, If I cache data that is 100GB, is that 1 or 100 credits? If I publish a site and 100 people hit it, is that 100 credits, but if they (the 100) hit the site 10 times each day by closing and reopening the browser, is that A LOT of credits. Need specifics to explain to Management. Perhaps a doc in the help with specific use cases using actual credits.

I think ESRI is going to have to rethink some of these. To me the most crazy pricing is the 2880 credits/yr for 1GB of storage for a feature service. So basically, you can upload 1GB of feature services and do nothing with them and it'll cost you over $2,500. Since when did storage get so expensive?
