Extracting / Exporting Markup

I'm exploring the potential to have users in a group record information at a specific location using markup tools built in.

We may build this capability down the road as an ESRI custom Web App but would like to explore the idea of capturing the information now leveraging ArcGIS Online. But we would need the ability to extract/export/save one-time the markup data as points/lines/polys (shapefile or otherwise) at a later date.

Any thoughts on if this is possible?

The mark up tools (map notes) don't support multi-user editing. You would need to create a feature service running on ArcGIS Server or hosted in ArcGIS Online via a subscription.

Mike - I've played with ArcMap 10.1 ability to publish a feature service directly to ArcGIS Online. This worked well in terms of providing a simple interface to edit a layer and basic attributes. This is good news.

I have a couple more questions related to your answer:

1) If we host our feature service on our own ArcGIS Servers, can users edit the features in the feature service using the ArcGIS Online UI ? Or do we need to publish the service to ArcGIS Online to leverage the ArcGIS Online editing user interface?
2) Do they need a subscription to ArcGIS Online (or simply an ESRI Global Account) to user the ArcGIS Online UI to edit features in the feature service?

You can edit a feature service running on your server through ArcGIS Online.
And any user who can access the web map will be able to edit the data in your feature service.

If you enable security on your feature service, users will need to have credentials to access your service. The web map will prompt them to sign in to your server.
