Historical Map Upload

Hello! Beginner GIS User here, I'm trying to upload a historical map that I georeferenced in ArcMap to ArcGIS online (in order to make a story map). Is there any way to do this? My file is not vector data.

You can create a tiled package and upload that to ArcGIS Online, and then create a hosted tiled service from the package.

Your historic map is beautiful.

I'm trying to do the same thing with a (much less beautiful) historic map of our county in Maryland USA. I've tried several approaches, but in each case, the tiles either do not appear in the web map at all, or only some of them appear.

I've used the Share > As Service option.
And Share > as Tile Package (following steps in the Help link you cited).

I watch the tile creation process through to 100% completion. But the REST Catalog shows that many of the Start/End tiles are apparently missing.

We have been using the following workflow:

- In desktop... create a mosaic dataset out of all the scanned images
- Publish the mosaic dataset to an image or map service
- Create tiles with ArcGIS for Server for the area of interest
- Create a tile package out of the ArcGIS for Server cache
- Upload this package with the share package tool
- Create a tiled service out of the uploaded tpk

This provided the best results for us.

If you don't have ArcGIS for Server you can try using ArcGIS for Desktop to create the tpk (from the file > share as menu) and share that tpk.

Can you check the services item details, what does the tiles progress dialog tell you? Are there levels at 0%?

I recommend logging an incident with tech support so they can further assist you.

In what form would I be able to overlay the georeferenced historical map to an online arcgis basemap so that I could put it into a
story map?
