I did some more testing and I can reproduce this problem with a few different tiled map services. I suspect that a custom extent cannot be used because the projection is not web Mercator, it's NAD_1983_CSRS_New_Brunswick_Stereographic. Unfortunately, the "use map extent as default" option seems to be pulling the extent from the service, not the web map that I set up with a more zoomed in extent.

Hi,

On my site I added a few basemaps to a group and set that group to be the basemap gallery. I also selected one of the custom basemaps to be the default basemap whenever someone creates a new map. I had previously set a default extent for the map; changing the default basemap changed the default extent to that of the basemap. I tried changing it back using the default extent widget but no luck--new maps still go to the default basemap extent, not the extent I set.

Is there another way to change the extent for a new map?

I already tried changing the extent of the web map that has the default basemap and selecting 'Use Map Extent' as default. That still sets it to the extent of the custom basemap, not the extent of the web map.

Any other suggestions?

Greg
