topic thumbnail in ArcGIS Online Questions

I justed uploaded new data, and no thumbnail was generated, is there a setting to turn this on or off. It should be just on, right?

What are you uploading? Layer packages and map services will automatically have a thumbnail because layer packages have an embedded thumbnail in the package and a thumbnail can be automatically generated from a map service.

However, map documents (mxd), layer files (lyr), globe documents (3dd) don't automatically have thumbnails because the file itself doesn't have a thumbnail inside of it. So these have to be created after the item is uploaded.

Is there a way to generate thumbnails manually for LPKs, in not, how does one do it for these other file types?

Transparency causes thumbnails to be blank

Ted,

If any of the layers being package use transparency the captured thumbnail will be blank.

The good news is that the problems with thumbnails have been corrected for 9.4 beta 2. Now (9.4 beta 2) the display on your screen when you create the package, is captured exactly as it is displayed.

Prior to this 9.4 release, the only way around the problem is to capture a picture manually (print screen, etc..) and edit it Online (Edit Detailted information -> click the thumbnail -> browse for a thumbnail to use).
