topic Background Text Color in ArcGIS Online Questions

is there any way to change the background text color for the description area for an organization to a value of none? The only option close to this is white but if I select white, you can see the white outline against the gray background color on the home page. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your time!

There isn't a way to change the background color directly from the user interface. You could try to do it programmatically through the ArcGIS Portal API

What exactly is your end goal? Perhaps another approach is to not use the description, but instead modify the banner image area, like described in this blog post.

http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2012/06/20/create-a-great-organization-home-page/

Mike

thank you for your response. The end goal is to be able to not specify a color for the background text. Esri has set up the site to include the homepage banner, description, featured content, and whatnot. The automated background color for the description area is a light gray. When I go edit my homepage, I have to choose a foreground color for the actual text as well as a background color for the text. Please see pictures provided. I believe there should be an option where you can choose "none" for the background color of the text. Right now, there is no option to that so I have to try and match the automated background that Esri provides. If you look closely to my attachment, you will notice a white square background everywhere I have inputted text. Is there an easy way to fix this? Thank you so much for your help!

Unfortunately, what you see is the way it works. We build on a toolkit that provides these html editing controls so we're limited by the control. The background color is simply the background color of the text, not the entire background color of the description area. We have discussed allowing organizations to use their own HTML for this page. But I think your best option at this point is to use the HTML option of the Banner to customize your page.

Thanks,

Mike

That is correct. The background color is the background of the text and not the description area. That is where my problem lies; however, I understand you are limited to the toolkit you are using. If at all possible, it would be nice if you could talk to the toolkit provider to see if this feature can be implemented. I do appreciate your time and understanding.

As a workaround, you should be able to rebuild your description from scratch, which should remove the background color. To do this, navigate to the description editor - backing up your text before you edit, if necessary - then highlight all the text in the editor and delete it. Make sure line breaks and white space content is deleted as well. Save the change, then re-enter the description editor and enter your text again. Make sure you don't click on or use the background color button while you are rewriting your description, then save when you're done.

Note that if you are copying from an HTML or Rich Text source (such as WordPad or MS Office) and pasting it into the description editor, it will keep as much formatting, colors and style information from your source as possible, as the description editor supports Rich Text. Make sure you are copying from a plain text source, such as text from an application such as Notepad, if you are going to paste text into the description editor and don't want to carry over formatting, colors, etc. from your source document.

Hope this helps,

Blake
