Adding related table to ArcGIS Online feature layer

I'm trying to figure out how to add a relationship class (related table one-to-many) to a feature layer within AGOL. I do not have ArcGIS Desktop or Server (do have QGIS but I don't think that will help here).

The only info I was able to find led me to believe that it may be possible by editing the service definition JSON but I can't find any reference as to how to edit it to make it work.

What are my options here?

Also, is viewing/editing/adding to related tables supported in AGOL web apps yet (not just Collector)?

It looks like this idea is still in the ArcGIS Ideas‌ phase but there is a potential work around in that thread that could help your situation.

Also, this FAQ mentions that AGOL does support joins and relates and lists a couple of articles on how to do this. It's not very robust though:

...but not having desktop might pose as a problem.

Based on that info it does appear that AGOL does at least support the usage of the relates. I still need to figure out how to actually create one in AGOL without Desktop.

I'm not sure how QGIS handles geodatabases but you can add a table to an AGOL map from a zipped geodatabase. Take a look at this article:

FAQ: Is it possible to publish standalone tables to ArcGIS Online?

Instructions:

Alternatively, the standalone table can also be opened in ArcGIS Online without using the publishing method. To do so:
Close all ArcGIS programs and zip the geodatabase that contains the table.
Upload the zipped geodatabase file to ArcGIS Online as an item in My Content.

Now relating it is a different story. I would have to play around with some stuff to see if it worked for me, so maybe it's worth trying that method?

We do support add relationship to existing feature service in online using feature service addToDefinition API.

Ex:

https://url/ArcGIS/rest/admin/services/<serviceName>/FeatureServer/0/addToDefinition

The origin layer and its related layer (table) has to exist. This API can only allow you to create a relationship between the two layers and be able to use queryRelated API on the layer.

In the Example below, you will need to define the relationship for each layer which reference that other layer.

Pl. note, the relationshipId for both layer is the same.

FYI we also support creating a view that joins both layers. Pl. let us know if you your workflow needs a view that has one layer that join both origin and destination layer.

The problem with that is that it won't maintain the relationship as that info is stored in the mxd, not the gdb. There is no way thru the interface to add a relationship in AGOL. However, based on Khaled's reply below, there does seem to be a way!

Eric,

This is not a relationship item and it is not related to the portal API. As you have noticed it is related to the layer relationships and can only be set using the feature servivce admin API. I will check check and see the documentation about this. The above example model one-many relationship between layers. You can define the relationship as a composite or not. In a composite relationship, the destination row will be deleted if you delete the origin feature/row.

I might be able to walk you through this if you have any issues.

Am I adding the "layers" tag? It isn't a part of the JSON of my test layer. I think i'm misunderstanding something as how can there be 2 layers within 1 feature layer?

This is a feature service addToDefinition admin API and this is why you can and need to add the layers array.

Pl. use:

https://url/ArcGIS/rest/admin/services/<serviceName>/FeatureServer/addToDefinition

and pass similar json to the one I have added in my response and let me know if it does not work for you.

Pl. note it is /FeatureServer/addToDefinition so it is not a layer admin call.

What do I need as a "serviceName" if it is NOT a layer? A web map name? I tried that and it says invalid url and I do not know what else it could be.

I think I have the right URL now.

Am I incorporating your sample JSON into what is already existing or completely deleting what is there and only adding something like your sample? (presuming since there has to be a difference between addToDefinition and updateDefinition)

Also, how am I defining what the 2nd layer is? As in, a pointer to the name of the 2nd layer (table) so it knows which table is related? I do not see any such reference in your sample.

Any luck on any sort of documentation on this? Seems to be a lot more to it.

I took the "layer" section from the JSON from the feature server for LayerB and added it to the JSON from the feature server for LayerA on the addToDefinition page. Then incorporated the sample from above into the relationships sections. Is this correct?

Sorry this is not documented well so I could not find the doc for you to use. Will work with the team to get this documented.

But you will need to follows the example I have sent you. Only what I have included in my example is needed. Before you do anything, pl. send me the full url (strip the token) and the json used. The json you have used in your last message is not correct.

All what you really need to figure out is the followings:

- Origin layer Id

- Destination layer id

- Primary key in the origin layer (field name that acts as a primary key)

Hi Eric Gardecki ,

Just wondering what you want to do once you have your relationship class defined in the service?

I ask since there are a couple of "solutions" that will work without having a relationship class in your data. An example is filtering data in a dashboard (operations dashboard will not recognize your relationship class and you can define fields that will be used to do the cross filtering). Another example is Insights which will allow you to configure relationships in your worksheet and if you want to visualize an aggregation of your related data in for instance the pop-up of a feature you could retrieve the related records without the need for a relationship class using Arcade. In feature services, client normally use queryRelated API to find out related rows to an origin or vise versa.

Another use case is to define composite relationship between origin layer and its destination layer. Deleting an origin row would delete the related row and if it is not composite the feature service would set null or remove the related rows by setting null in the foreign key.

In the top of all these, editing is the main requirement to use relationships.

All other solutions in arcgis are read only join.

We do offer similar functionality (similar to insight) build in the feature service to do join and combine the two layers into one join layer. If the join layer is what the client needs, it will be good to continue and model it inside the feature service rather than external services like insight since all clients can use the REST API on the feature service join layer as any other non-join layer.

I am trying to do something similar to the esri Collector sample for fire hydrant inspections. I will have a layer for catch basins, that need inspecting. Each inspection needs to be recorded and kept for historical purposes. Hence the related table, which would house the inspections for the catch basin layer. So when a user does an inspection via Collector, they click on the feature and add a new related record. The inspections MAY need to be entered via a web app at times, and I will need to display the features in a manner that shows which features have been/not been inspected within a given time period. I will need a dashboard displaying assorted status information.

I haven't looked into what issues I may encounter when trying to used related records to symbolize and extract for a dashboard but hopefully that wouldn't be a problem.

If there is another way to accomplish this, i'm all ears!

I am still missing something. Still do not know how this references the 2nd layer. So the JSON for LayerA has one layer, id "0". LayerB has one layer, id "0". You keep saying just add the id of the layer but that doesn't make sense as then there would be two with "0" and that doesn't reference the other layer in any way.

For reference, LayerA is just a shapefile I uploaded. LayerB is a csv, also uploaded.

In my JSON pasted above, I added the entire section where there is a 2nd layer (made it id 1). So removing that you would see what the existing JSON is.

So when finally adding the correct JSON, I would remove what is already existing in the addToDefinition, and replace with the new (much simpler) one?
