Add Numeric Data as a Label

I am just starting to work with ArgGIS Online and was wondering if there is a way to add numeric data as labels to a map. This is easily done within ArcGIS Desktop. For example, you can label a county with the county name or you can change the label to area, population, etc. I don't see this option with the Online product. Does this capability not exist? Can you plot text strings as X,Y data? I don't see this as an available feature.

There is no labeling ability.

What about adding a layer that contains graphic text? I've seen something about that in a google search. Is that a possibility?

The ArcGIS.com website doesn't support adding text as graphics. However, you can use another application, ArcGIS Explorer Online to do so. http://www.arcgis.com/explorer. Sign in and you should be able to open any web map you created in ArcGIS.com.

Mike,

I looked at this and I can see how it is possible to manually add data values as text, but I have too many to do them all manually. Is there a programmatic way this can be done, such as importing a kml file with text labels and lat/lon xy coordinates for the label?

Check out this resourse on adding labels to ArcGIS online. I've only tried it for a few features and it seems to work okay as long as you get them placed properly in arcmap.

Thanks Sarah. This is exactly what I was looking for.

I wish I didn't have to jump through all the hoops, but at least I CAN jump now.

I think this is a short-sighted design issue with ArcGIS Online. I can't believe there aren't more people out there that want to plot numerical data labels on their maps.

I'm also a little bewildered that it was so hard to find this information.

Anyway, thanks to you, I don't have to give up completely on ArgGIS Online now.

Here is a somewhat complex process that allows you to add labels without having to create a tile map service. If the search function on the forums was worth a damn, I might have found this by myself. But ESRI tech suport (Jegan) found it in a few seconds.

Thanks. I think this will work, but I agree that it is complex. Doesn't seem like it should be, that it would be a feature that is common and in high demand. I have always used labels on data plots. And it was hard to find. In fact, I couldn't find it either. I just had to create a new thread and hope someone would answer. I gave up on finding it myself.
