App Registration.... What is it?

Greetings AGOL fans.

I was doing some testing with a WMS service which I subsequently added to a Web Map. Next, through the Web Map, I created a simple application using the Legend template.

When I check my content and click on my new application, the description page opens and reveals an element that is new to me: App Registration.
Here is an illustration:

I've gone mad searching for a description (in the help pages, google, etc.) of what registering an application means, but to now avail.

Would anyone be able to provide an explanation (not a guess, please :rolleyes:), or a link to where I can learn about this er... feature?
