For customers who deploy ArcGIS Notebook Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux, or via Windows containers (currently a beta feature with ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0), the appropriate Docker edition for container allocation is Mirantis Container Runtime (MCR). MCR—formerly Docker Engine-Enterprise—follows the same installation pattern as other Docker editions (e.g. Docker Desktop), where the Docker software must be licensed and installed on each Notebook Server machine. For example, if your organization has a 2-machine Notebook Server site, then you require 2 Docker installations, one for each Notebook Server installation.

Install Docker for ArcGIS Notebook Server (Linux)

Install Docker for ArcGIS Notebook Server (Windows)

In Mirantis terminology, purchasing Docker licenses equates to purchasing “nodes”. Using the same example above, if your organization has a 2-machine Notebook Server site, then you require 2 MCR nodes, one for each Notebook Server installation.

If your Notebook Server deployment requires the purchase of MCR nodes, you will see on the Mirantis pricing page that there is a minimum number of 3 nodes required for purchase. After discussions with several of our Notebook Server customers, we understand that many have 1 or 2-machine sites, meaning that they would require less than 3 nodes.

If this scenario applies to you, please reach out directly to Nick Giner, the ArcGIS Notebooks Product Manager (nginer@esri.com) to discuss options.

Thank you!

Hi Nick, you could clarify your statement "If your Notebook Server deployment requires the purchase of MCR nodes". The one that that is kept us from moving forward with Notebook Server in production is the license cost of the MCR nodes. Is there a scenario where we would not have to purchase the licenses, or are you just referring to test and dev environments. With us preferring to use RHEL, MCR is the only supported option.
