is there a possibility to get a smooth transition between line widths of road data? See screen capture.

If you have access to Standard or Advanced license, you can use Representations (Understanding representations—Help | ArcGIS Desktop ) to solve this problem:

You will have to indicate that you want to merge the roads in the Symbol Levels:

And you will have to set the Caps to Round (twice):

Hi Christiane Enderle , that indeed looks better that what I produced with the symbol levels and representations. Not sure if this can be achieved. Would be great if a real cartographer from Esri jumps in...
