Since you have .isdef files and you indicated you are on 9.3.1, then it would be the 'stand alone' Image Server as you have described. The Image Server extension that utilizes mosaic datasets did not exist at 9.3.1, they are new to 10. Here is a document that explains many of the differences.

Can anyone tell me how I can quickly confirm which one of these two products is installed!

I am a desktop specialist with no server experience and am working with image server /arcgis server for the very first time. It's 9.3.1 so could be either one right?

If the definitions files are '.ISDef' does that mean it's the old standalone product? Or does this mean they were created in a 9.3.1. product regardles of whether it was the standalone or new extension? What is the file extension for a mosaic dataset and do these only come into play with 10.0?

Thanks
Tim
