Field Maps 24.1.0 Crash on Feature Edit

On Feb 29th we experienced a severe issue across our fleet of Android devices running the new 24.1.0 update. Upon editing a line layer on Field Maps, the app would crash to the android home screen. The line layer is hosted on ArcGIS Online. This crash occurs on all Android devices tested (Samsung Galaxy A34, Motorolla Moto G (5) Plus, Motorolla moto g power (2021), Motorolla moto g(7) power, Motorolla moto g(8) power) but iOS devices are not effected.

In the Log, the only [DEBUG (error)] is this

Tue Mar 05 07:13:48 HST 2024 : [DEBUG (error)] - Uncaught exception!
java.lang.RuntimeException: Failed to call observer method
at androidx.lifecycle.f$a.a(Unknown Source:74)
at androidx.lifecycle.ReflectiveGenericLifecycleObserver.c(Unknown Source:12)
at androidx.

We've temporarily fixed this by rolling back Field Maps to an earlier APK but we would like to raise this issue so it can be fixed and we can return to running the release version of Field Maps.

Any advice would be appreciated.

We had the same issue Thursday and Friday. Seems to have corrected itself as of yesterday. I had an open case with Esri but haven't heard anything.

Hi Alex,

Are you only seeing this when editing line features? This may be related to an issue we are aware of and are looking at addressing asap. It has to do with line layers that are set to update attributes only in the editing settings.

Yes Field Maps only crashes on the devices when editing lines features. Editing other features doesn't cause it to crash. This line layer is to set to update attributes only in the editing settings so this would appear to be directly related to this issue.

We're still experiencing it here on Android devices using Field Maps 24.1.0. Devices with previous Field Maps Versions are unaffected.

I can confirm its the same issue. This has also been logged as BUG-000165649 with Tech Support if you would like to contact them to be attached to it. Attaching to the BUG will give you updates when the status changes. The team is working on a fix now.

We've found the same issue, raised an ESRI support ticket on Monday 4th and have now been given the BUG-000165649 Colin mentioned above. It is only affecting editing line features with attribute only editing rights enabled. When changing to attribute and geometry, the field maps app doesn't recognise any smart form configs and all fields are editable... not ideal! iOS devices do not seem to be impacted for us

I am now on version 24.2.1 and this issue seems to be happening again. Line layer, with attribute only editing set.

Hi @lizmsnow , does this crash only occur for you with this specific configuration (on a line layer that is only enabled for attribute updates)? Have you investigated if a certain attribute/field is causing the crash when updated? If so, what type of field is it? Also, if you notice any errors in the logs please share them.

Hi Colin,

It appears to only be when editing a specific field (text). I messed with allowed attributes and geometry edits and it was still crashing. Maybe it doesn't like that the default value is null until the user changes it? I've attached screenshots of what I'm getting in the logs.

@lizmsnow The null default could be the problem based on the error in the first screenshot; I assume the timestamp on that error lines up with when you are crashing? The second screenshot is unrelated.

Is this still occurring. I am working with a customer of ours that is continually seeing crashes in Field Maps. They are running a Trimble TDC650 (Android 10) and are not using offline maps. It seems to crash anywhere between 5 and 10 times in an ~8hr session. This is when updating existing point layers (attributes and geometry). We have tried both online and offline maps with the same result so we know it's not a syncing issue. It almost always happens when tapping submit too. We are on the latest ESRI Field Maps and Trimble Mobile Manager. Any chance Arcade could cause it to fail this many times per day but not every time a feature is updated? The Arcade simply calculates orthometric height in USFT and a date field using the Now() function to get the collection date to populate automatically. Thoughts?
